On busy days when I know I don’t have much time to prepare dinner, I like to use my slow cooker. My family absolutely loves this simple yet satisfying pulled pork. Step 1: Season the Meat
It is necessary to cook pork, especially when using a slow cooker. Once you start the hit, you don’t want to lift the lid, so it should be a good idea to take some time to think about the flavors and spice up the front.
We were very heavy with salt and pepper in the beginning and preferred to rub pork with it, adding salt to all the nuggets of meat. We also season it for 15 to 20 minutes before adding it to a slow cooker.
Step 2: Cook the pork on low and cook it moderate
In the wake of preparing the meat, we set up a blend of cooked onions, garlic, tomato glue and flavors. It is poured over the pork, and we are prepared to cook.

Step 3: Skim the cooking liquid and then save

Remove the cooking liquid from the slow cooker and skim as much of the fat as you can – remember, the pork shoulder is thoroughly mixed with the fat, so that all will melt in the liquid. Discard the excess fat (which will float to the top) and then stir it back into the pork to keep it extra moist and tasty.
Another option is to chill the pork in the cooking liquid. When it cools, the fat will freeze, which makes it easier to peel with a spoon.
Step 4: Combine Pork and Comb with Skimmed Cooking Liquid
After skimming the cooking liquid, place it back in the slow cooker. Then just shook the pork – I use just two forks to do it. Since it is so tender, the pork will literally fall on you.
Put the sliced pork back in the slow cooker with the skimmed cooking liquid!

Pulled pork is perfect for a slow cooker. Pork cooking is the secret of very little and very slow juicy and most tender pulled pork. Serve pork or feel free to stir in your favorite barbecue or other sauce at the end of cooking.
Makes about 3 1/2 pounds, 10 servings
Ingredients of Pulled pork slow cooker recipe:
- 1 (4 1/2 to 5 pounds) boneless or bone-in pork shoulder (also known as pork butt), twine or mesh removal
- 2 teaspoons salt, plus as required
- 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons neutral flavored oil
- 1 medium onion, peeled and chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tbsp or light chili powder, see our homemade chili powder recipe
- 2 tablespoons ground cumin
- 1 cup water
- 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 Tbsp Fish Sauce or 1 Tbsp Worcestershire Sauce
For service (optional)
Rub the pork with salt and pepper, and then set aside while preparing the remaining ingredients. (See the notes below if you plan to find pork first).
Warmth the oil in a wide dish on medium warmth. Add the onion and garlic, then cook with stirring occasionally, until they become sweet and brown around the edges. Add tomato paste, chili powder and cumin seeds. Cook, until tomato paste changes from bright red to orange; About 3 minutes. Add water, apple cider vinegar and fish sauce and cook for about 1 minute, scraping the brown bits on the bottom of the pan.
Let the seasoned pork rest in the bottom of a slow cooker, then pour the onion and spice mixture over it. Wrap the pork around the bottom of the slow cooker so that some of the onion and spice mixture slides down. Cover with a lid and cook until the pork is easily peeled; Low for 6 to 8 hours or High for 4 to 6.
Turn off the slow cooker and transfer to the pork cutting board. If there is a bone in the pork, remove it and discard. Use two forks to peel the flesh, discarding any connective tissue, large flakes of fat.
Drain the cooking liquid and skim off most of the fat from its surface. Discard the fat and then set the cooking liquid aside.
If using barbecue sauce, add it to a slow cooker and stir in the sliced pork. even more flavor, add some of the reserved cooking liquid oil. If you are not using barbecue sauce, add chopped pork and cooking liquid to a slow cooker. Taste and season with salt and extra vinegar, hot sauce as needed.
